Test Lab

A program which began in the corner of our Fish Pier workshop to develop buoys on which macroalgae could grow and characterize the behavior of those buoys in simulated ocean conditions grew into it a dedicated facility called the "Ocean Hub." We developed a number of custom tools and procedures to understand the chemical and physical performance of prototype products so that they could be improved. We also tested samples of deployed material to collect critical data related to mCDR quantification and credit minting (the details of these tests are in our methodology).

  • Acid leaching / dissolution over time

  • Float time in static and wave / agitated tanks

  • Density over time due to water absorption

  • Macroalgae growth (growth per square meter of substrate area, GSM) over time (in different temp and wave environments)

Wave Tanks

Wave tanks in our Ocean Hub facility were designed with tunable wave amplitude and frequency. They were used to observe the effects of wave action on macroalgae growth and the float time of various substrate materials including coated wood chips.

ORCA

The Onshore Research Camera Aquarium (ORCA) was developed to build a database of imagery that allowed us to correlate visual growth with biomass and ultimately carbon mass. More information on the ORCA program can be found in the Macroalgae section.
