In order to determine optimal deployment sites for macroalgae cultivation to enhance CDR, we used a one-dimensional macroalgae growth model integrated with ocean dynamics and ecosystem models (see figure below).
We applied regional environmental conditions to the model to identify suitable locations and seasons for cultivating both Ulva and sugar kelp. By simulating macroalgae growth at various sites in the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, we identified subarctic regions with high nitrate availability and appropriate temperatures as ideal for both species. According to the models, Ulva shows optimal growth during summer and early fall, while sugar kelp thrives in early spring. The models consider key environmental factors such as insolation, ocean temperature, and nutrient availability, providing insights into seasonal and geographic variations in growth potential. This approach underscores the importance of tailored deployment strategies to maximize CDR benefits and addresses challenges related to environmental variability and ecosystem interactions.
Here is a poster we presented at AGU Ocean Sciences Meeting 2024 which summarizes the macroalgae modeling work.
