๐ŸŽฏIntroduction: The Mission

Running Tide's mission was to rebalance the carbon cycle and restore the health of the ocean.

Running Tide's vision was to develop a multi-pathway carbon removal system, poised to operate safely at scale in the open ocean. Our goal was straightforward and ambitious: to research, develop, and deploy marine carbon removal across geographies that could scale to the size of the problem.

Recognizing that the ocean's natural systems are already the most powerful and scalable carbon removal technology, our vision was to develop a portfolio of fast, safe, effective interventions designed to amplify these natural processes. Depending on the geography, environmental conditions, and regional capacity of the ocean to store carbon, we hoped to optimize any new carbon removal project using the best tools and technologies in our portfolio. Operationalized with existing infrastructure like ports and ships, we strove to build financially feasible and readily scalable carbon removal projects that could be replicated around the world.

We invested heavily in research, development, and engineering to make our vision a reality. We raised money and stood up multiple programs - advancing science and engineering internally and with amazing external collaborators - to build a future where open ocean carbon removal would be viable at gigaton scale.

Now, amidst Running Tide's wind-down, we want to share what we built and what we learned by publishing reflections, data, and documents. We hope that others in the space can learn from our mistakes and successes and understand how we approached the carbon removal challenge.
